|
|
Traditional grammar verses generative grammar and secound language.
If some one defines second language in concrete form then Pakistan and India
are not coming in list of second language of English speaker as in both mentioned countries no
English community lived side by side with them. English is foreign language for Pakistan,India, and
and Srilanka.Canada is bilingual country and French and English are teh common tools for communication.
When British was dominant over the whole world and Red dressed army was on the peak; a large population
was living on beach of Kolkota.English has borrowed many words from Indian soil, like 'Shawl', jungle, bangle
and thus made english rich.
But after partition , British left Hinduisation for forever and thus made English a forign language for Sub Continent.
But English is still offical language in Sub Continent and thus practically a second language.
English as second Language is very obscure and ambiguous for speakers.
We always try to translate one language to another one but the fact is that
there is no language, or dialect which can be translated completely to other language
with exact expression and tone.
Interpretion may be possible as all holy books are translated into thousands language
but the orginal language can not be replace by any other language.
In past words meanings were the foucs point of every learner but today contextual
meaning is the essence of a language.
One word can be used several time , every time in differnt sense .
For example the word 'gay' means homosexual but if we use gay in a sentence it sifts its meaning to happy man
He belongs to a gay family, it means he belong to a rich and happy family.
Today the role of dictionary is very meagre.
Same is the case with grammar , grammar was considered the essence and soul of sentence but today its role is lowered by introduction of phonetics ,lingustics.
It is observed that no child is taught obout grammar but still he or she speaks language according to grammatical role.
This rule is also applied to second language speakers.Today more stress is given on phonetic.
Chomsky , the man who for the first time describe generative grammar and transformatinal theory added a new charm in the learning a second language.
Grammar was dead before Chomsky .
Now comming to ambiguity in language ,as in few sentences we can not know the intention of speaker.
For example 'She hurts her foot'.
Now reader is in the real dilemna because he or she is not sure about the contextual meaning of sentence.
The ambiguity about this sentence is that whether she hurts her own foot or she hurts some one else foot.
We have another example 'Chicken is read to eat.' Now question arises in the mind of writer whether chicken is ready to eat some thng or some agent is ready to eat and engulf the chicken.
These two example show that grammar cannot solve such problems.
Practice makes man perfiect and second important thing is that one should absorb himself or herself in the mind of writer rather than looking for meaning of a word.
Here is another example regarding grammar
For example Robert said that he is a doctor.
Robert said that stress that he is a doctor.
In first sentence that is conjunction while in second setence 'that' is a type pronoun.
But grammar cannot differeniate between these two sentences.
These are my personal observations, and we may or may not contridict with me and secondly i am using any book for this article so if there is mistake u are welcome to correct it.
I AM NEW WRITER AND THIS TOPIC IS VERY OBSCURE AND SOME ONE KNOW MORE AND MORE ABOUT LINGUSTICS HE OR SHE SHOULD WRITE ABOUT THIS TOPIC AND PLEASE CORRECT ME ALSO THANKS
THANKS
