My wife just received a kidney transplant.
I returned from the hospital at 3am this morning. It is now Saturday 10:49. I shall be returning to the hospital soon. The surgery went well. The kidney comes from someone who died in Utah. Actually two kindneys arrived, so my wife and some other patient each received a kidney.
People who have just died are called "cadavers" (not sure of spelling). A "cadaverous" kidney (as opposed to a kidney from a living donor) takes anywhere from 48 hours to 7 days to "wake up" and produce urine. Her kidney has been in now for 24 hours almost. It still does not produce much more than a drop or two. IF it wakes up within the next 7 to 14 days, and produces urine, then it will be a success. If it does not wake up in two weeks, then it will be a failure. There is nothing to do but wait and see.
IF the kidney is a success, then the statistics show that it may possibly last as long as 12 years. My wife is fifty now, so twelve years would bring her to age 62. If it fails at that time, she would have to go back on haemodialysis. But, much may happen in 12 years, in terms of technological advances. Perhaps there shall be some great advance which produces an artificial kidney implant, or a machine which is in the home. No one can know what the future may hold.
