If I spend an hour in a chat room, having a long discussion with two or
at most 3 people paying attention, then my words quickly disappear
from the screen, and I have accomplished little.
BUT, if I post at a message board, then it is possible for hundreds of
people to read an participate, and I may speak an much greater
length and depth, and what I stay remains available for months or
even years.
My notion is that, in a chat room, you meet one serious person... you
begin a detailed discussion in PM about some book or topic... then
you edit it and post it at the message board as a dialogue.
I have created a message board of forums for serious discussions at
http://www.literarydiscussions.myfreeforum.org
If you visit the message board and go to the SHOWCASE, you can read
through an overview, cross-section of highlights
Yesterday, here, I met a physicist in Italy who is translating the
letters/correspondence of Richard Feynman into Italian. So he joined,
and in PM we had a long discussion about some problems he is having
with a certain unusual expression that Faynman used in a letter to his
mother
My notion of how to use chat rooms productively is to meet one serious
person for PM, discuss a topic in depth, past and post the edited dialogue
at a message board, and from that, generate an essay
as Kierkegaard pointed out, ultimately, it is our own mind which
chooses to give importance or authority to whatever is "said" to us.
Ultimately, it was Abraham who chose to take seriously his experience
of God telling him to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham could have assumed it
was his imagination, or a devil. By the same token, it is we who
choose to take seriously the insults of others.
as Eleanor Roosevelt said, "No one can make you feel inferior without
your consent."
you see, if YOU really have thoughts of your own, then you are foolish
not to post them somewhere at a blog or a website or a message
board.... and if you HAVE done so, then you merely have to post a url
link to prove it, BUT... you have not done so, and you cannot post a
link and therefore, you do not have thoughts of your own
