I have attempted to pose this question in IRC Underdog, Philsophy,
hosted by Skept, but without much response.....

Here is a transcript of my posts...

My question, in a nutshell, given the facts of the fate of our solar
system, is it a moral imperative for human civilization to devise
some way to preserve and perpetuate our achievements beyond the
demise of our solar system. If NOT, then all of our philsophic and
cultural endeavor, however clever, is for NOTHING.

I have a philosophical question to present, in regards to the end of
our sun (supernova) predicted in appx 8 billion years

But, I shall only pose my question if one or two express some
interest

I suppose Skept himself is not really here right now reading... but
if he were, i would very much like to pose to him my question
related to the end of our Sun/solarsystem in eight billion years

here it goes... physicists predict that our universe (sun, and
planet earth) will disappear in something like eight billion years
(give or take a billion) because our sun will supernova

so... that means that all of human culture/history/literature...
everything of value will disappear UNLESS, we do certain things
(which I will describe)...

i.e. our sun's supernova is a true armeggadon/judgement day (defined
by astrophysicists) and quite different from whatever judaism,
christianity, islam, etc. might call a judgement day

If humanity devotes itself to developing a technology which will
allow some of us to escape this solarsystem and migrate towards some
other, viable system, within next 8 billion years...

or... unless we develope cyborg AI technology which will continue
on, preserving our culture, ideas,.... (e.g. OMEGA point,....)

Unless we stop warfare, etc... and concentrate on TRUE ARMAGGEDON,
in eight billion years....
then all our philosophy, culture, mathematics shall be lost

(someone poses some inane objection to something I have said, which
is not central to the issue)

No... not a fair criticism... since the fate of our sun is a reality
ok... so.. actual question,.... is it a true moral imperative for
human civilization to transform itself to address this REAL problem,
rather than all the current bickering over palestine, iraq, etc
I am simply using the term Armaggedon....

but BOTTOM LINE, eight billion years FROM now, the day will come,
then end of life on Earth,

but.... for all our philsophy, ethics, religion, etc... and all our
science, math, technology,... we can now walk on moon if we choose,
but we are no different with regard to emotions, than the epics of
Homer and trojan war

We have advanced technologcally greatly,.... and we have advanced
somewhat on notions of human rights, law, democratic republis... but
we still are at same level of wasting our energies in warfare and
violence...
hence, we squabble over islam, christianity, judaism, etc.... but we
ignore the real deadlines (such as supernova)....

and... if all of us truly value the endeavor in
philosophic/scientific/mathematical inquiry.... well... it will all
disappear in eight billion years, unless we can take some action NOW

This is fact is quite obvious and undeniable, in spite of any clever
rhetoric which anyone here might pose to the contrary

As usual, many miss the point and become distracted in side issues,
and contentious arguments

But i am grateful to at least have some opportunity to express this
idea here...

Namely,... that here i have posed an undeniable reality of a problem
which faces all mankind, and holds in the balance the fate of all
philosohpic and intellectual endeavor...

and yet, the young minds of today are so conditioned to the lazy
resort of contention and disputation, that there are people who feel
satisfied to pose one or another inane and insignificant objection
(the tactics of a highschool debate team), which certainly in no way
addresses the heart of the issue

I am not some petty ego, here to win a moment of glory, i feel i
have stumbled upon a profound problem, and i sincerely wish that
other minds, superior to my own, would take up the ball and start
running with it, so to speak
