Legend has it that one day a certain student approached Socrates to inquire his opinion regarding a certain tyrrant (king) in a neighboring kingdom.
"Socrates, that tyrrant seems to me to be the embodiment of pure evil!"
Socrates answered, "I do not agree with your perception of that tyrrant, but I do dearly wish that you were correct and that he were actually unmitigated evil."
"Why, Socrates! What and odd thing for you to say! Why on earth would you dearly wish such a thing?"
Socrates explained, "Well, IF it WERE possible for one person to be the embodiment of pure evil, THEN that would mean that somewhere else, I might find some person who was the embodiment of absolute goodness. And I love the good so much, that I would gladly tolerate the exisistence of pure evil in the world, if it meant that I could sit at the feet of pure goodness. But in point of fact, human nature is constituted in such a fashion that each person is an admixture of good and evil."
