literarydiscussions: in poetry prior to 100 years ago, meter was very important.... poetry in the last 100 years in english has become more free, less rigid in meter, and rhyme scheme
literarydiscussions: ancient greek and latin epics like homer and vergil were in dactylic hexameter...
literarydiscussions: in english, one only rarely sees dactylic hexameter,... for example "This is the forest primeval...."
literarydiscussions: by wordsworth or longfellow, i forget
literarydiscussions: Robert Frost used a lot of iambic pentamer
raza207: i think metre is used to create beauty or regularity
raza207: as it is defined as regular ruthmic language
literarydiscussions: wallace stevens uses rhythms , but not strictly metre
literarydiscussions: tastes change from era to era..... people who like poetry in english in this century prefer things more like wallace stevens, ee cummings...
