In what sense does speech create a virtual person?

Fiction probably has its origins around primitive campfires, where hunters
and fishermen would recount their expoits. Often, such campfire
discourse was factual, historical narrative of real events. At times, the
narrator would stretch and embellish the facts, to magnify himself. This
virtual self which the narrator portrays evolves over centuries and
cultures into the self of the fictional character, which usually has no analog
to real people, places, and events.

As the virtual self develops and takes on a life of its own, it becomes a
protagonist or hero.

A curious symbiosis takes place between the real self of the reader, the
real self of the writer, and the virtual self of fiction. At a certain point, the
fictive self begins to transform the reader, and inspire the reader to
actualize the role model of the hero.
