I've been exposed to a number of theological perspectives growing up. I swore off "that stuff" in college yet more and more, I find the idea of attending a seminary or engagin in chaplaincy work to be very attractive to my interest. What gives?

The ethic of service is one that is very strong, in particular among secular people. I have known a lot of people in the various "helping professions." I'm constantly amazed at some. I work with a man who has worked 35 years as a teacher. He retired and hated every minute of it. He was away from the paperwork, the bureaucracy, the meetings, but he still hated it. He missed the companionship of colleagues, as well as helping his students. When you are in the minds, hearts, and souls of those you help, being selfish and just doing what you want to do doesn't enter into the equation. I believe that you are more than correct in your analysis of this desire for the chaplaincy.
When it comes to companionship, Paul recognized the importance of it:

The greater meaning and importance of the church may not be the icons, the symbolic acts, or the church leaders-but rather, the people in the pew and their association with one another.
