literarydiscussions: I am just posting an interesting discussion I had yesterday with a student in Pakistan, near the China border
literarydiscussions: it is the last post in this link

http://literarydiscussions.myfreeforum.org/ftopic667.php

mahendra_ku: i am reading it

literarydiscussions: thanks

mahendra_ku: yes I havegone through this discussion on religion
mahendra_ku: I feel he is a humanist cutting across all boundaries of religious blindness

literarydiscussions: it is amazing for me to find such thoughts in Pakistan, near to Afghanistan... a real eye opener.... and to see how the Internet makes world wide communication available to such a student

mahendra_ku: yes of course
mahendra_ku: he is uncommon
mahendra_ku: and refined

literarydiscussions: Yesterday, I purchased an inexpensive microphone for my computer, and am now able to do voice chat in Yahoo... and I chatted with this student in Pakistan for 30 minutes

literarydiscussions: well, it is not essential... typing is also good.... but through yahoo, the voice chat is totally free... no extra charge... it goes through the internet

literarydiscussions: ethnographic novel

literarydiscussions: by Pratibha Ray

mahendra_ku: yes
literarydiscussions: ok, i am reading now

mahendra_ku: if possible u may write to pratibha ray
mahendra_ku: pratibha_ray@yahoo.com
mahendra_ku: to give her strength
mahendra_ku: you know how male writer are dominant here
mahendra_ku: She is the Murtideviaward winner, and central sahitya academy award winner in India

literarydiscussions: ok... i shall email to her some words of encouragement

literarydiscussions: since you mention this novel which give an account of sexuality, which scandalizes certain people... I shall mention to you a documentary here in USA on educational television, regarding the AIDS epidemic in Africa, which cited one reason or cause as something called "CONCURRENCY"

literarydiscussions: Concurrent relationships mean that, in a given village, one might find 6 men and six women, who, during the course of one month, might all have relations with all the others.... concurrently..... and such behavior GREATLY increases the spread of AIDS virus

literarydiscussions: well, explained this notion of concurrency to one american black woman , and she became very offended, saying that this was something that the white man makes up to make the black people look bad... and then she said there is no AIDS crisis in Africa, that it is something that whites make up

literarydiscussions: but the white doctor, on the documentary, went to work in Africa,... and I do not think he is making up stories.... I think that there must be a real crisis, and I believe that CONCURRENCY must take place in certain areas

literarydiscussions: i have seen various documentaries about AIDS in India.... one contrasted Calcutta, which is more socialist in government, and has programs of health and eduction for prostitutes,.... contrasting with Mumbai, where there are not such social programs

literarydiscussions: and it said that Calcutta had reduced the spread of AIDS...

literarydiscussions: and apparently, in Africa and in India too perhaps, it is the truck drivers who spread the disease.... and they demonstrated that the spread of AIDS followed along certain major trucking routes
mahendra_ku: and fond the precarious conditions of the children woth out schooling

mahendra_ku: India is going to be another africa

literarydiscussions: the truckers believe that heat builds up in their bodies, and that having sex is a way to release that heat.... and there are many poor prostitutes who frequent the truck stops

mahendra_ku: yes
mahendra_ku: and now the road side Dhaba(Motel) nearer to rural villages are fallinga prey to it

literarydiscussions: i feel that the black american woman who became angry with me regarding concurrency is simply in denial,... and does not want to accept the possibility that such things go on

mahendra_ku: also girls trafikking

mahendra_ku: thousands of girls are sent to cities

mahendra_ku: in the name of houeshold work and once they go they become prostitutes

literarydiscussions: i do not know if or where such documentaries are available on net... i only see the television broadcasts
