When Jeffmax and I met, through a Yahoo chat room on Current Events,
I was still at work, at the end of the day, and rather tired, so there was
not much time to reply to Jeffmax's excellent question (above) regarding
the manner in which the USA, as a superpower, seems to police the world.
Certain things need to be said, initially, with regard to myself and
Jeffmax.
Jeffmax is a college student in Nigeria working towards a pHd in the
sciences. During our chat, Jeffmax expressed his feeling that there are
many who are prejudiced against people of color, and also those who
dislike Nigeria. I explained that I married a woman of color, and have
dated African Americans, and that I do not feel predjudices, although
predjudice certainly exists in the world and is a strong force.

Jeffmax-shoot me a PM or e-mail sometime, I'd love to have this
kind of discussion with you as it is a key interest of mine as well. The
U.S. can be an incredible source of goodness and sadly, bad
consequences. To me, it depends upon who is in power that determines
whether or not the U.S.s policies will be beneficial or to the detriment of
the rest of the world. The U.S. can be a good peacemaker. Jimmy
Carter's Camp David Accords in which Egypt and Israel signed a peace
treaty is one of the most outstanding events of the last century in my
personal opinion. Not only that, but president Clinton was an integral
party in the Good Friday Accords which has brought lasting peace to
Northern Ireland. Even in the Middle East, just bringing the parties to the
table repeatedly will lessen violence-at least Clinton tried to accomplish
that much when he was in office.
At other times of our history, we have done things to the detriment of
those around us. Witness the Vietnam war-a conflict that was essentially
a war for independence, but which was mistaken as a communist vs. free
world struggle war. We interpreted the event wrong and we lost-no
wonder. While we are more than justified in our present conflict in
Afghanistan, there is no justification for the war in Iraq. It has been a
drain on our economy, not to mention a cause of great sorrow for so
many families and friends of the 2,000 some odd soldiers and workers
who have been killed over there. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11 and
the Bush administration played with the facts in order to get their little
war. It is distressing that the media and congressmen did not resist Bush
when this whole thing was starting up-unfortunately, it will take a few
more years of futility and moer deaths before more Americans wisen up.
I do believe that my country is an awesome giver of aid and can be a
positive role for peace in this world-like any other nation, it requires the
right kind of mindset among elected leaders. |
